how much did it cost you to get diagnosed?

i contacted a therapist whose rates are approx $100/hr. he's had experience with and diagnosing people with asperger's, and said he's worked with people who have capd, but it's not his specialty. (he's the president of a san bay area therapy community (gaylesta) for people in the glbt community). i asked a bunch of questions (reason why i'm asking, his experience, etc.) he responded intelligently and with detail.

he said it would probably/usually take(s) 5 sessions to diagnose asperger's syndrome. i mentioned the reason i'm doing it is for job security, and he said he couldn't guarantee that a diagnosis would helpful, as it's not an official disability, etc, that i'd need to depend on the goodwill of my employer. in the context of official state/federal disabilities, something like that. i explained that i lost a extremely good paying job 2 years ago because i asked for special accommodations to do my job, they told me i had to get a diagnosis (for capd, that i had trouble translating spoken language and couldn't do transcription) or i couldn't work there anymore, so i lost the job.

he said that probably what might be more helpful for me is to get a diagnosis for capd. i had told him that i would consider speaking to my supervisor (who's unbelievably accepting, which i why i'm working so hard to keep this job) and possibly disclose to him that i'm on the autism spectrum (which he might already suspect), and ask him if me getting a diagnosis would help me. basically, i do very good work at my job, but i am having continual problems with noise levels in the office, chaos, meetings, phones, and have run into problems several times with 2 other members of my dept with them telling me that my inability to be perky, smiling, the lack of emotional reciprocity (tho they didn't phrase it as such), that they brought up to me, all sorts of drama, and one of them went behind my back and complained to a former not so cool supervisor. that i'm asking for special accommodations (special desk, cube replacement, ability to work from home part of the time, hours rescheduling, etc).

anyhow, he said to be careful with disclosing at work, that it could hurt instead of helping, just to keep that in mind, and then said he'd wait to hear from me further as to what i wanted to do.

i would want to get the asperger diagnosis just to do it, cuz i'd feel a lot safer (even i couldn't prove it'd legally be solid in terms of h.r. policies/job security-- i'm a designer, by the way, for a nonprofit). so i'm inquiring about the cost/method of getting the diagnosis.

at 5 sessions, $100 a session, that'd run me $500 or so dollars. he accepts my insurance plan, but i'm not sure my insurance would pay for it, how to get them to do that.

for those of you who've gotten diagnosed, was 5 therapy sessions how you did it? and how much did it cost you?

thanks in advance.
