I went to the doctor yesterday, and had my ear flushed the fuck out with pressurized water and peroxide. It was every bit as unpleasant as my traumatic childhood memories would indicate, except I didn't scream, I'm a big boy now so I just tensed and shook and groaned as silently as I could manage and told the nurse to keep going when she wanted to stop. It took six goes but the blockage popped out, finally. I got a look at it ad thought, it felt a lot bigger inside my ear. I'll spare you the visual description, suffice to say it was unpleasant. My hearing was not only restored, it was intense, overstimulated. It was like every tiny little bit of audio minutia came pouring in through a funnel straight to my brain. I've always had trouble sorting and filtering sensory stimuli. I'll be referred to an ear nose and throat specialist, after this last month plus ear incident. Apparently I have oddly shaped curvy ear canals which is the root of most of these problems. I'm pretty sure my grandmother on my fathers side mentioned having a similar affliction.
Hereditary defects like this raise some interesting speculations, if its passed down from generation to generation, when was the first person to display the defect, and whence did that person get it? Mutation, but caused by what? Cosmic rays? A billion years ago a star dies in one of the most spectacular phenomena the universe knows, in it's death throws it spits out a stray particle that flies through the vastness of interstellar space, on a trajectory that, instead of taking it from the void between stars to the abyss between galaxies, enters the solar system, intersects the orbit of earth and collides with a molecule that ends up in a genetic strand belonging to some unnamed ancestor of mine, altering it's contents ever so slightly, in just the right way not to kill said ancestor in the cellular phase, but rather cause a small, non-life-threatening but hereditary congenital defect to the ear canal, to be passed down through the generations and cause me a lifetime of ear infections and painful blockages.
