when leonardo divinci was painting the fresco "The Last Supper" at St Maria delle Grazie, he added oil to his tempera (paint made from eggs) in order to give it a brighter look--
as a result only 18% of it remained before it was restored.
the paint never dried into the plaster and gradually melted off.

crazy, eh?
