Recipient: u_evangeline Title: When the Dragon Met the Wolf Author: madamechataya Rating: R Pairing: Jon/Dany Word Count: 1144 Summary: Jon Snow meets Daenerys Targaryen. Warning: None
I'm glad the author did not go for the 'expected' ending--Jon learning that he's a Targaryen and hence switching his allegiance to a Targaryen queen, his aunt--if R+L=J. Yes, they're allies, but Jon is less eager or willing to make personal or political commitments--he's survived a lot. And no, he won't support her quest for the Throne until she does what she can to save Westeros. She, too, has to learn for herself why the rebellion against her family succeeded. She was, apparently, unwilling to hear Ser Barristan, who had served several kings--why should she listen to Jon Snow, bastard son of Eddard Stark, who had Stannis Baratheon living in the Night Fort. Both in character, and a very well-written interaction between them.
I really like the sparseness of this fic; fitting for the setting on the Wall. Also, as the previous commenter said, it was nice to see Jon keeping his allegiance to the Night's Watch (however loosely he interprets his vows! Good for him!) and taking no part in Dany's presumed conquest of Westeros. Great characterisation of both--two people whose circumstances have shaped them so drastically that they really couldn't work together in the long term...like most of the alliances in these books.
This was really well written. Although I adore them together, and would really like to see them as a couple someday, I think you got them perfectly. That's exactly how their interaction should be. Their families have a history, and such history weights heavly on their shoulders, which is perfect on this story.
I thank you for the beautiful story you've written for me. I hope I can read more from you once I know your pen name (:
