[[Nighttime; June 23rd]]
[Elicia had had
a tough week.
Shuffle, shuffle-the sound of turning blankets and small feet moving back and forth through them. She's been rolling in her sleep for a few minutes now, flipping her hidden journal into a little book tepee, while it records the buzzing air and soft incoherent murmurings of a child dreaming. They'

For now, maybe.]
I know a good story, little sister. It's a good one, about how the rabbit got all the way up to the moon. Would you like to hear it?

Once, the old man in the moon looked down into a big forest on the earth. He saw a rabbit, fox, and monkey living in the forest together as very good friends. [As per the norm, Miyabi's story comes with pictures. It's not awesome ones like her other story, since this one's meant for the smaller children, so her style is more cutesy and simplistic.]
"Now, I wonder which is the kindest," he said to himself. "I think I'll go down and see!"
So the old changed himself into a beggar and came down from the moon to the forest where the three animals were.

Ooooh, I understand! So he's gonna test them, like-like how you get a reading test in school, to see how good you can read!

[Miyabi paints the next picture, continuing the story.]
"Please, help me," He said to them. "I am very hungry."
"Oh, what a poor, old beggar!" The animals said, then went hurrying off to find some food for the beggar.
The monkey brought a lot of tasty fruit, and the fox caught a big fish! ...But the rabbit couldn't find anything at all to bring...
"Oh my, oh my! What shall I do?!" He cried, but then got an idea.

"Please, Mr. Monkey," the rabbit said,"you gather some firewood for me. And you, Mr. Fox, please make a big fire with the wood."
They did as the rabbit said, and when the fire was burning very brightly, the rabbit said to the beggar: "I don't have anything to give you, so I'll put myself in this fire, then when I'm cooked, you can eat me."
[She pauses there, waiting for Elicia's reaction. Don't worry, little sister, this story ends well, Miya's just letting the minor drama sink in.]

Just as the rabbit was about to jump into the fire and cook himself, the beggar suddenly changed himself back into the old man of the moon.
"You are very kind, Mr. Rabbit," the old man said. "But you should never do anything to harm yourself. Since you are the kindest of all, I'll take you home to live with me."
[Here, have another, larger picture, little sister.] Then, the old man of the moon took the rabbit into his arms and carried him up to the moon. If you look carefully at the moon when it's shining very brightly, you can still see the rabbit there where the old man put him so very long ago.
[And she takes a bit of red on her brush, outlining the shadow of the moon she drew, so that it looks like a rabbit making mochi.]Another rumor says that the rabbit still is the kindest of all, and makes rice cakes for hungry people and animals to this day. That's why the rabbit god of my ( ... )

People who are born in the years of specific animals are said to gain some of their traits as well. And are protected by them in the future. Do you know what year you were born in, little sister? I can tell you what animal god you're born under!

[and she is so so proud she remembers this. 8|]

That's the year of the dog! Elicia, you were born under Amaterasu! [Even though Ammy was a wolf, and not a dog...] Amaterasu is the strongest of my gods, and the mother of all the other ones. She's also the Sun goddess, and my very best friend! If you're born under her year, I know you'll be blessed for years to come!
