Heir to the Vow
"I wonder what it'd be like to have someone care about you so much they'd make an Unbreakable Vow." Scorpius was lying on the dormitory bed - not his, but Albus's - on his stomach, his legs bent at the knees, ankles crossed in the air. The Second Voldemort War was open in front of him. He gave Albus a sidelong look.
Albus sat on the edge of the bed. It was getting harder and harder to be close to Scorpius without really being close. He wanted to say, I care enough about you to promise anything, but you didn't just blurt stuff like that to your best friend. "Reading about Snape and your father again?"
Scorpius nodded. He closed the book and rolled onto his side. "Do you think vows are passed on?"
"Passed on?"
"Yeah. Inherited by the next generation." He looked thoughtful for a moment. "If Professor Snape had an heir, do you think that person might be bound to me by Snape's vow to my father?"
Albus shrugged. He might be a Ravenclaw, but his thoughts didn't run as deep as Scorpius's. "Doesn't matter, does it? I mean Snape didn't have kids."
Scorpius pushed up so he was sitting, his knees folded in front of him, arms encircling his legs. He ducked his head and looked at Albus through pale fringe. "You kind of have an inheritance from Snape."
"My name?"
"Yeah."
"I guess."
Scorpius nodded. "You're Snape's heir. So if a vow could be passed on, it'd be passed to you, right?"
Merlin, this was all way over Al's head. "I suppose. What's this all about?"
"We'll be done with Hogwarts soon."
Two weeks. Only two more weeks left of sharing a dorm with Scorpius.
"I don't want to be without you," Scorpius whispered.
It was like Scorpius had read Al's mind. Al searched Scorpius's eyes, looking for a hint of exactly what he meant. Finally, he asked, "What do you want?"
"A vow. A promise that we'll always be together."
It was what Al wanted more than anything - what he dreamed about. He chose his words carefully. "When two people want to be together forever, they sometimes bond. You know, like they marry. That is, if they feel that way about each other."
"Do you?" Scorpius was finally looking him full in the eye.
"Me? I…" Al sighed. "Yes."
Scorpius dove at Al and pressed their lips together in an all-too-short kiss (which made Al's stomach swoop), before bounding off the bed and snatching a scroll from his desk. "We need to set the date, but I've already written the guest list."
Albus looked from the long scroll to Scorpius. "Did I just walk right into that one?" Scorpius had a way of getting Albus to say exactly what Scorpius wanted.
"Of course you did." Scorpius leaned forward and kissed Al again.
Albus found he really didn't mind being led around by Scorpius - as long as the kisses kept coming.
