Where the hell is facebook's contect? I honestly can't find it. I log on, and see that I have friend requests from people I don’t really know. Then I see two monosyllabic messages from friends, and two irrelevant messages from people I don't know who were invited to the same event as me . Then I click to the home page and I see the “news feed”. It consists of somebody I know commenting on the wall of somebody I don’t know regarding something in which I am not involved. This is what I get after having been EXTREMELY selective about who is on my "friends" list. Had I adapted the more standard strategy of accepting all requests, I cannot imagine the degree of abstraction of relevance this ‘news’ would reach. I keep feeling like I am missing the ‘meat’ of the site, but with dawning despair, I realize: this is it.
I also find it telling that it is far, far easier to click through to pages where I can instantly add friends than it is to actually view the pages of my present friends. Perhaps this is because a comprehensive social network is the main value of facebook to its advertisers and data miners. Perhaps it’s just a mindset with which I am unfamiliar.
Descend, then! Let uselessness run roughshod over the land. I will confirm all friend requests, which which I am inundated, and see that site as my peers see it, that I may better understand them.
