Out of Character: Twin Oaks Nursing Care Facility
So. I’m wanting to set up a universe for Oliver based around his time in Twin Oaks Nursing Care Facility. This post is going to serve as the place where anyone who is interested in picking up someone in this facility can come and hash out ideas with others.
I guess I should start with a bit of backstory for those who are unfamiliar with Oliver. His profile does provide a good, short rundown of what’s been going on in his life. But just for the sake of ease, I’ll lay it out here. Back in March, Oliver was on vacation with his roommate and some of his college friends. After a night of indulging in a bit too much tequila, the group of them decided to go for a swim in a nearby creek. They all took turns stripping down and diving in one by one. True to form, Oliver had to show off a bit. He attempted a headfirst dive off the dock, and ended up landing in a rather shallow portion of the water, right on his head. Not surprisingly, his neck broke and he was rendered a quadriplegic.
After some months healing from the injury in the hospital, he is about to be transferred to Twin Oaks. His parents have decided that they aren’t interested in taking care of him, and he really has no other resources or ways to help himself out of the situation. So off to the facility with him. The place itself is a bit like a nursing home, but don’t think of those places that old people go to. This is for the disabled, chronically ill, and others who are unable to care for themselves and require extra attention. While there is a good population of people who are older, there are also a few people in their twenties and such, and a few even younger than that.
Yeah, so this is where I’m looking for people to come in and pick up some characters related to those who might find themselves around the nursing facility. The possibilities are honestly limitless. From doctors and nurses to cooks and secretaries to other patients and volunteers. Let your imagination run. I’m thinking that we at least need some people to play core staff members: nurses who are there 24/7 for the care of the residents, doctors who oversee the care, and therapists to take care and facilitate groups. Occupational, physical, respiratory, art, recreational therapists… the list there goes on and on. Then there are people like the cook staff, the janitors, the secretaries, and other people who make their living working at the facility and helping out, but don’t necessarily do anything in the medical field. Beyond that, there are always volunteers coming in and out as well. Younger people who are there as part of their education, or just to be a good Samaritan. People who bring therapy dogs, help set up recreational activities, and just act as friends to the residents.
And yep, we’ll need residents too. Older, younger, physically disabled, chronically ill, or even developmentally disabled. Whatever suits your fancy.
In terms of Oliver personally, I’d really like for him to have the potential for a love interest either in a nurse or in a volunteer who comes around to help with groups or something. For the ease of finding icons together, I’d like the PB to be Minka Kelly. The PBs for everyone else are totally up to you. Surprise me!
