SAY

Sonny cantered over the gravel
and offered a tail to your phobia
Hopalong obliged with warnings
and care loped away across the field;

I name the dogs as if to help.
The kernel of what cowers inside you
is what I need. Say a brick lined
crowd a saturday people one upping

say the littlest one fishes her feet
turn then ankle then toe then sole
say all of this would you trust
me the monstrous guiding voice

I fling to you. Say honey where does
your fear fathom can I sound it
will it branch into earth like caves
can it be allayed returned rerun

or is it here to stay. Honey
I gave you a thing like my own
together we hold it against enemies
of the flesh, somehow you have to hold

or I will have no comfort. The dog
the backfire the flesh you fear now is so
nothing is so nothing the parts of it
I cannot save you from.
