I went to a free show tonight at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. The show was a visiting troupe of Chinese Acrobats performing on the main stage. As soon as I started driving to the show it started raining, the closer I got the worse the storm. In true theatre fashion, "the show must go on," and it certainly did. The management opened up the paid seats to anyone who chose to stay and the multitude of lawn-people rushed the seats in an orderly fashion. I was given my seat by a nice couple provided that I would stand up and hold their umbrella for them every time the rain started blowing into the area (we were on the last row).
The show itself was astounding. Usually when you think acrobats, the circus comes to mind with high-wires and trapezes. This was a pure floor show with elements of ballet, human sculpture, free-running, magic, hula-hoops, oversized yo-yos, and furniture juggling to boot. The grace of these performers was coupled with strength for the more gymnastic moves and showmanship for the more entertaining bits.
I love the internationality of this city. The performers were from China, just visiting. During intermission I talked with people from Scotland.
While I was driving to the show I was struck by the sky-scape and will need to expound on this line of prose at some point:
As I drive under the cloud laden storm-ridden sky, the dichotomy of day and night is more pronounced. I can tell that I'm driving down the umbral line separating the last shining rays of the sun from the shadow of the Earth and Moon.
The only thing that detracted from the evening was that I couldn't find the person I was trying to meet at this event, but the fact that I went and TRIED is good enough for tonight I think.
