I've been contemplating a tattoo for a while now, and I go back and forth about whether it's a good idea for me considering I want a professional career (social work of some sort). I have scars on my left forearm and wrist from self harm. The scars are old, 5+ years old. I want to tattoo either "love" over them, partially because of the to write love on her arms movement. If not that, I want to get "I will make better mistakes tomorrow" in that spot.
On the one hand, I figure that any career that would be impacted by my having a tattoo there will be impacted by the scars anyway, so whatevs. On the other hand, the scars will fade (but likely won't ever disappear completely) whereas a tattoo won't.
I get so many rude comments from people about my scars and I kind of feel like tattooing them will make me "own" them a little more and show that I'm embracing that as a part of who I am. Ideally, I want to work with teens in residential treatment centers dealing with mental health issues and drug issues anyway, so showing that I've been there might help...?
AMA, do you think a wrist tattoo will impact my future career?
