Becoming a librarian

Oct 18, 2012 10:31

I want to become a librarian, having worked in libraries as library assistant and shelver I've really enjoyed it.

Problem is to do postgraduate courses most places ask for 2.1 sometimes 2.2 degree, but I have 3rd class degree. Is there any chance in hell I could get on any courses?

Yes. My OH did a distance learning course at Aberwystwyth a few years ago and she hasn't even got an honours degree. She got the diploma in about 18 months, then pretty much straight way got a position as a librarian. Roughly 5 years on and she's now a chartered librarian running a medical library, so it is definitely possible.

Oh okay that is good to know. Looking at those courses was just damn depressing.

From what I can remember (this was about 7 years ago), they thought it far more important that you were working in a library than having academic qualifications.
