Anyone see David Cameron on the David Letterman show? What did you think? Non-British people, what kind of impression did you get of him?
My thoughts:
- Letterman seemed incredibly ignorant about the United Kingdom/British Empire/England thing. If I spoke to someone who thought that Russia was still called the Soviet Union, or that New York and California were both part of Washington, I'd think they were a complete idiot.
- Even more so about the Ireland/Northern Ireland distinction. I'm aware that Ireland isn't a major nation whose history is common knowledge all over the world, but given how closely tied it is to America, an American person not knowing that seems inexcusably ignorant.
- I'm certain that Cameron knows exactly what Magna Carta means but pretended not to because knowing Latin is associated very much with the upper-class Etonian background he comes from but would like people to forget about.
