I was pleasant to them, but did not share personal information about myself or really ask them how things were in their lives.

Right. Basic human politeness & a professional demeanor are the way to go here, and just don't get personal.

OP - Whatever you do, don't ever take the "I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to do my job." attitude. I've never once met a guy who plopped that crap out that wasn't both an asshole and ineffectual at his job.

A friend pretend to be good buddies with a manager she despised, but she would go out of her way to be annoying sometimes since she really didn't like the person.
I was cool (as in almost cold) to the same manager, but tried to be friendly. I had much less distaste for the person, though.

I generally try to be nice, polite, and friendly but don't go particularly out of my way to do it [I won't pretend to be their best friend or try to hang out with them after work or something]. I always want to keep the lines open just in case we have to work closely together some day, or they have to cover for me when I'm sick, or whatever. You never know. Being nice can go a long way.

Feign vague friendliness and ignore them usually. Sort of a combination of everything you mentioned.

At my old job, I hated my co-manager. It was mutual. Basically we ignored each other, but we do share some interests so we would just talk about that stuff and not stray long after switching shifts.
