Mankind's inherent nature

Question for you about the nature of mankind.

Do you believe that, as human beings, we are inherently self-interested, or inherently charitable? (This is my main point of interest with this post. Individuals can obviously vary from the "norm".)

For bonus points, I was once told that liberal and conservative politics almost completely boil down, philosophically, to this question.

The idea being that conservatives believe people look out for their own interests but when everyone does that it creates our own social order, while liberals believe that our natural instinct is to give and receive in return and if everyone shares that is the best way.

Thoughts well appreciated.
