We have similar paneling in a room. My husband is as attatched to it as your parents seem to be. He wants it to be his den when the kids grow up. *sigh*

I will run through all of the ideas I have had for that room, even if they are way too young.

When it was my daughter's room we had a romantic fairy/floral theme. she had a white gauzy canopy and floral bedding. We even had plans to drape tulle around the ceiling and string up white lights. Tons of nature pictures which we got using an old nature calendar and cheap wood frames we found at the dollar store. Drop the fairies and it could have a spa-like feel.

The girls and I have thought of a safari theme. Using golden and grassy tones.

All kinds of cabin themes...North Woods (Forest green, blues, bears and birch)...Tacky cabin (plaids and fabric featuring day-glo clad hunters and dogs, and deer antler lamps..gotta have those)...Nordic cabin( blues and yellows or reds in traditional designs)... almost every culture has a traditional cabin theme...pick something from your history.

Asian (blacks, reds or blues)
Island theme. (Greens, plus whatever that is bright and loud.)
