Rediculous request/stupid question?

Aug 05, 2011 00:24

I get to my office after work around 10pm-11pm.  I stop in to put my equiptment away and switch from the company vehicle to my personal vehicle.  I'm there a total of 10-15 minutes, tops.   The problem is that I'm scared.  It's in a office/storage unit complex.  There isn't a single place with people in it for 2 blocks, and any houses there are, ( Read more... )

Totally beside the point but 'rediculous' is spelled 'ridiculous' :)

You could call the police department and ask if they have a regular patrol route that your area is on and ask if there is any specific time they come by -- if they have the patrol that is.

Another is, how about calling someone as you pull up or such and be talking with them while you are in that area of concern. This would give anyone thinking of doing anything to you, pause. And *if* something did happen, someone would be completely aware of... well... something was happening to you.

Do you carry anything like a backpack or messenger bag or such? Put something really heavy in it and use it to knock into any possible assailant. You might also see if there are laws against carrying some sort of collapsible baton with you -- some people carry canes, those long handled flashlights or umbrellas for this reason. Another is, check out tazers -- one of them could make you feel better, even though you have to be in touching distance of the person. But, if your assailant already has an arm wrapped around you, you've the perfect place to jolt them.

Also, if you can change to street close before getting back to that area, try that -- wear something that's easy to move and run in; something with a good heel so you can stomp on your assailant's feet or kick them would be really good -- steel toed boots or such.

If you can, and there aren't any, request some (additional) security lights be put in.

If your car has an alarm system, hit the panic button if you suspect anything. Consider putting one in if you don't have one. ... I think there was an alarm company that offered personal panic buttons as well -- not one that went with a car -- but I can't really recall.

Another is to make sure your dome light works so that, as soon as you electronically unlock your car, use a key in the door or open the door, it comes on and you can see if your vehicle has been compromised. As soon as you are inside, lock all the doors and turn your headlights on.

... I can't think of anything else at the moment....

Good luck, take care.

I stay on the phone with my husband when I'm entering and leaving. Before I get into my work van, on my way out (to move it to where I keep my truck), I reach in and turn on the dome light, just in case somebody's in there (inspired by an email forward from years ago). I start it up and drive away immediately, away from my office itself to the wide open area where my truck's parked. I don't carry anything with me. I'm lifting 100lb totes onto my dolly, which I need both hand for (duh. lol). The lot is well lit.

I think I've covered my bases, but even if I'm on the phone, how long would it take for my husband to call for help and for them to get to me (paranoid much?)? The only thing I haven't thought of is the panic button on my truck. That could make enough noise. I could keep my finger on it.

Life alert? My son suggested I should get one (when he was 3 and apperantly watched too much tv). "Just in case you've fallen and can't get up."
