man today was my first day serving...ever.
yes i worked at outback...as a busser! and yes i''ve been at foster's grille for 2 1/2 years, but we don't wait there.
so, tonight was my first experience, and i took tables, i didn't even really know what i was doing sometimes. megan came and helped out a lot and that was great. i can see why they like her around so much. but even so, she's worked in chili's, uno's, and a bunch of other restaurants as a waitress before and had prior experience.
now i did make plenty of mistakes. but every time i did and i went to jenny, the manager about it, she gave me this look like, "are you an idiot, i cant believe you did that" and so i felt dumb, but i shouldn't have! it was my first night! no one realy trained me properly and told me whare everything was and how to do everything. i had to guess and ask a million questions.
but that didn't bother me, by the end of the night i felt great (even though i was mad tired). i was like, "i love this job already.," until it was time for jenny to cash me out.
see no one explained to me how it all works with the credit card receipts. so jenny said "select the check, put in the gratuity and then hit finished" that's all she told me. i did that. what she didn't tell me was that the money i had from checks paid in cash went to my tips. i had one check for $32.89 and one for $19.98 or something that people paid in cash with. Jenny told me I owed her $32.49. i assumed that tips from credit card got put onto our paychecks because some restaurants do that and so when she said that, i thought the way it worked was that i paid the money the people gave me in cash for their meal and kept the cash tip then i would get the credit card tips on my paycheck. apparently, as shontae explained, it is not that way at all. jenny was suppoed to give me my tip money and i don't even know how it all got screwed up. so still being in the mindset of paying cash for what was paid in cash, i realized i had a 20 from one of the checks and ran bank in and told her that was to pay for the one order. she said thanks for being honest but again gave me that "you are an idiot and now youve made ten times more work for me" face.
so basically i gave her money that was mine...and i'm not even sure if i'll see that money. BUT NO ONE EXPLAINED IT TO ME. if it's my first night and jenny knows i've never served before, don't you think she should have explained a thing or two to me? i mean, i realize i make some dumb assumptions sometimes, but they were all logical assumptions to me.
