First there was the backpack a few weeks ago. I was too small for all the fucking women's travel packs. So I had to break down and buy a real backpacking backpack (exciting!!) because they have custom fit options. Thankfully, it was art fair week and everything in the store was on sale. Plus the guy really liked me or something, because I got 30% off instead of 25%! Compensation for how many times he felt for my hipbones so he could adjust the backpacks' hip belts appropriately, maybe.
(Plus it took forever because they were super-busy, and I told him I was absolutely broke. And he "enjoyed talking to me.")
But! I went over to Bivouac today after work, just wanting to figure out what size of Keen Targhee would fit me, because they're supposed to be really good hiking shoes. I already knew Bivouac didn't carry the color I wanted, so I was going to buy them on Zappo's tonight.
Over an hour later, I'd figured out that they feel the best of all the hiking shoes at Bivouac (okay, of the like 6 I tried on), but apparently I'm right between 9 and 9.5! Friendly, knowledgeable, over-experienced shoe guy tells me that if I'm doing much hiking on an incline, I could lose a toenail. They're just a little too short. But the my heels won't stay in the nines, no matter how tightly you tie them.
WTF. CAN'T MY BODY JUST BE A STANDARD SIZE?
(At Target, in the same basic style of T-shirt, I have to buy medium in the crew neck and small in the v-neck. Which makes sense, but I'm trying to make this more universal.)
There was one other shoe I liked, but they only had it in 8.5. Unfortunately, Zappos doesn't carry that model so I can't try it with free 2-way shipping. Hopefully Moosejaw in the Village has it...but I doubt it. And I wanted to have ordered my shoes by the time I'm in GP again. And I've never been to Moosejaw and I don't want to and I am SICK of feeling stupid talking to outdoorsy people.
On the plus side, the guy at Bivouac taught me how to tie my shoes better.
