we write love songs in C, we do politics in G

~ I feel the need to play The Smiths' Panic and Green Day's Kill The DJ and The Old 97's Niteclub on a loop for a while. I can't explain the vagaries of my brain and music. These just need to be played until the synapses that connected them stop firing.

- Death of a Salesman. I don't remember Hoffman's Willy Loman being as angry as Glenn Fleshler's. Or the play being as long. Liked the set, which is very minimalist/modern except for the old-fashioned icebox in the kitchen space.

~ KPFT's fall fund-drive is happening now. The goal is $300k. They didn't meet their goal last time, and I know that for the two shows I answered phones for yesterday, neither met their goal. There were long stretches of time with no phones ringing at all. It was the first weekend of the drive, and both shows had guest DJs. Whyyyyy? Loyal listeners are more likely to give $ if they're hearing the voices they trust, and there's a rhythm to the music vs patter from the station manager, and guest DJs interfere with that rhythm. Local elections are coming up soon, with implications for overall Pacifica politics. Ugh, I wish I didn't know some of the gossip I learned from station members the other day. :(

+ On the flight back from Rome, I watched an episode of Luther, which I had been meaning to see but kept putting off for one reason or another. Give me ALL THE EPISODES NOW. Idris Elba, you play an obsessive intellectual detective beautifully. And now I have to go find all of S1 and S2 and possibly rewatch The Wire because Stringer Bell. Then I'll follow that with Grimm.

~ Also on the trip: tried to read JKR's The Casual Vacancy. Really really not my thing. Finished Shadow of Night for bookclub, and Breakaway: From Behind the Iron Curtain to the NHL. Interesting, but I guess I was expecting more shenanigans and less of the practicalities of getting the defecting players to North America and then the (sometimes tragic) process of them getting used to their new homes and leagues. This did make me dig up some youtube clips of Bure/Mogilny/Fedorov, though. PRETTY GOALS.

+ Book that's open right now: Bad Science: Quacks, Hacks, and Big Pharma Flacks.

++ FRANK TURNER, UNF. Let's begin at the beginning. He and the Sleeping Souls look like they are having so much fun on stage, every time I see them live or in video.

music, oh life, tv, books, what was i saying again?
