FFUUUUUUUUUUCK.
Dumbass post-doc has one lab chore. ONE. To keep the storage dewar cold. The vapor will keep cells frozen if there is literally ONE INCH of liquid nitrogen in the bottom, as long as the lid is on.
I checked before I left for Italy - it was half full.
First email from my boss this morning: welcome back, post-doc let the tank run dry.
That is over 10 years of cell samples. Some of them are easily replaced, like HeLas or MCF7s. Some we had growing, although they're higher passage now. Some are clonal cell lines that took MONTHS of isolation and characterization.
Gone.
SHE HAD ONE LAB CHORE. Check the tank every week, roll it down to the nitrogen tanks if it's getting low & refill it. HOW HARD IS THAT TO DO? APPARENTLY REALLY FUCKING HARD.
ETA: OMGGGG, and now she tells me that "no one told me it was low" and she was "too busy with her experiments". WTAF?!?!?!?! EVERYONE IS BUSY WITH THEIR EXPERIMENTS, AND THEY MANAGE TO COMPLETE THEIR LAB CHORES.
The most enraging thing is that she clearly doesn't feel at all bad about it. Like, hey, you just fucked the other post-doc in a major way, because she's spent months making clonal cell lines that are all dead, but hey, don't worry, it's not your fault because obviously someone else should do your chore for you. And I'm sure that my boss, who, if you recall, is the least confrontational person EVER, didn't yell at her at all.
