1. Ran into a biochem prof on the way in today who told me he was spending the day doing "biochemistry remediation". That is, he is re-schooling last year's first-year students who failed biochemistry. Think about that for a minute. Yeah. People who want/are going to be responsible for your health who FAILED basic biochemistry. I pretty much think that means they should get the boot, because that's, like, a basic knowledge problem. But no. The med school is giving them another chance. I'm curious to see what happens with the proposed changes in med school admissions requirements, which will make biochemistry required for admission, and then not taught at all in med school. They want to streamline and shorten the undergrad to residency process, but I... have my doubts.
2. Penn State. I basically watched my twitter feed explode this morning. Look, $60M is nothing to that program. It is one year of gross revenue for the football/athletics program, and that doesn't count the millions of dollars that boosters donate to the athletics program every year. It is a PITTANCE, nothing in comparison to what PSU & Paterno let Sandusky do to those children. I'm more concerned/interested in seeing what a huge drop in game-day attendance will do to the economy and the day-to-day lives of the citizens of the actual town of State College, PA, which probably depend significantly on profits made at bars, restaurants, hotels, and retail outlets during football season. IDK, I'm a cynic, and I think that the big money that comes from a football program in a big conference means that these sanctions won't mean the end of Penn State football in the long term.
3. My boss is on vacation this week. That means that there will be no sudden requests for new experiments done RIGHT NOW. :)
