My iPhone is activated and working!

If you're on my flist, look for my separate friends-locked post with the phone number. It's the same mobile number I've had since December 2004; I've just moved it over from Verizon to (sigh) AT&T. Incoming calls are still going to Verizon, though supposedly only for a few hours until it's completely switched over. My Verizon message is "...you know the drill," while my AT&T message is "...leave your name and number, and I'll get back to you." (Yes, that's a deliberate homage to "The Rockford Files.")

So far it works like a dream. I haven't yet figured out how to select "iPhone favorites" so that I can load a selection from my iTunes library onto it. The touch-keyboard can be endured, but I hope they'll push a firmware update that allows it to be used in landscape mode for all functions. I spent a couple of hours getting my contacts into Outlook 2003; those from my LG phone were brought over via Data Pilot, and from Palm Desktop via Pocket Copy. That was the easy part; then I needed to edit them, deal with duplicates, etc.

Now to go out to dinner and try the Wi-Fi in a few different locations, maybe.

And this is not just a toy; I had been wanting a new phone for a while, and a pocket-sized Internet appliance was wanted (though not quite needed). So while I'm keeping my 80 GB iPod, I can use this one for the same function when 8 GB will do. That reduces the number of pocket gadgets from three to two. If I can get my CD database into Zoho Creator and access it that way, I can leave my Palm Tungsten T3 behind and have only one pocket gadget. "Convergence" is never quite perfect, though.

Besides, maybe this will be a geek-babe magnet. Well, a guy can hope, can't he?

P.S.: Oh, yeah, which of the following do you think I've already set as my ringtone?

Alarm, Ascending, Bark, Bell Tower, Blues, Boing, Cricket, Digital, Doorbell, Duck, Harp, Marimba, Motorcycle, Old Car Horn, Old Phone, Piano Riff, Pinball, Robot, Sci-Fi, Sonar, Strum, Timba, Time Passing, Trill, and Xylophone.
