Hear it in my head real low.

I've been trying to come up with the words to describe how I felt after seeing Yeah Yeah Yeahs live in Auckland on Wednesday night at the St James.

Here are some pictures:

It was a triumphant rock concert in every possible bone-shaking, pulse-racing, heart-choking way. This is a band that will never just 'go through the motions' - every show they put on is 200%. Their kinetic songs tear the place apart, and their mellow moments hold the audience in a tarnce.

They opened with a very intense performance of Fancy from the latest album before hitting us with the one-two punk punch of Rockers to Swallow and Pin. I can't remember the order of rest of the setlist but they played all their singles and lots of my personal favourites like Black Tongue, Cheated Hearts, Y Control, and Honeybear, the latter got the audience dancing with prickly ferocity. The encore of Maps, Turn Into and Date with the Night was a fitting ending. Maps had me a little choked up (I've written about why I love this song) and one of my newest favourite songs-of-all-time Turn Into is the kind of stirring "everything is OK" songs that always fills me with a warm glow.

Even though it wasn't a sell-out, there was a large tun out of very devoted fans. We really need a venue this size in Wellington. It's perfect for these smaller bands.

The sound at times was very distorted, especially when it got very loud. On the other hand, the lighting was amazing; the giant YYY logo at the back lit up and flashed different colours throughout the show. A simple yet striking effect.
