In this spirit of keeping this up to date, I'm moving back to New Orleans at the end of this month! I'm super excited but kind of scared. I'm looking forward to getting a "real" job and not waiting tables. Im not exactly sure where or what I'll be doing, hopefully it will be something where I can use this handy dandy degree I acquired about a year ago.
There are still some things I need to put on my life to-do list.
Learn Spanish
Piano Lessons
Adopt a Dog
Visit England with my Mom
That's all I can think of for now but Im sure there are more.
I'd really like to do House of Shock again this year seeming as though I'll be back in town, I know they usually have their first meeting in June or July or so, so Im hoping Im not too late and they don't tell me to fuck off.
In other news, Im off work until Sunday night, then I work
Monday 4pm
Tues 10am/4pm
Weds 10am
Thurs 10am/4pm
and I told them I couldnt work nights anymore... see how well that worked out.
Also I went and got some ice cream today from Braums ice cream. There was a black lady in line behind me and a black guy taking my order etc. Well the woman behind me is fidgeting around and acting like she wants to get in front of me, so when I go to pay the guy is like, "Uhm I think she was first." (pointing to the lady behind me.) Just because she's rude and WANTS to be in front of me doesnt mean she is.
I've also noticed that race seems to be a big issue here. My manager told me that in the 60s there were some riots in Tulsa which still causes tension between blacks and whites. Its kind of sad because they really are mean to me. When I wait tables alot of them are horribly rude to me and alot of the other girls. One girl got a note written to her the other day, they stiffed her and the note said "Fuck you bastards, you aint worth one cent BITCH!" I know for a fact this girl didnt do anything wrong, how is this ok? Someone should address/explain the concept of racism... and how it applies to blacks judging whites just as much as it does the other way around. Double standards suck. I hate to judge people based on race but when I see a black table now sometimes Im automatically afraid they're going to stiff me and be incredibly rude and demeaning. I do my best to brush off the snide comments and turn it around on them in a playful way, but sometimes it just isnt possible.
I had a table last night, Im assuming they were born in the 50s since they had a "Remember the 50s" birthday card on their table. He started out by insulting me because I didnt know what he meant by "on the left and the right." I said "which two sides would you like with that?" And he said "on the left and the right" I said "Hm?" He rolled his eyes at me and sighed... "One side for the left side and one for the right side!" He explained as though EVERYONE is supposed to know what the hell that means. "Aaah" I smiled and waited patiently for him to actually choose his sides.
While they were eating I asked them if everything was alright, and he replied that eating was a process and he was eating very slowly and enjoying himself. "On the left and the right" I said. He laughed and said "YEAH! You got it!" He seemed happy and we chatted a bit after that. When I picked up his plate I dropped a knife on the table.
"Is that your new knife trick?" he said.
"Yeah I guess I should practice more, not very impressive is it."
"Yes, you should get it right before you whip it out like that."
I laughed and walked away with the plates.
We talked about my name and I said "It's easy to remember." He said "Mine is easy to remember too... it's Africa." A few minutes later he called me over by saying "Hey, Ethiopia!"
After their meal they sat there for a loooong time... it was almost closing, I was cleaning ready to head out, waiting for them so I could collect my tip and clean their table.
They left me five dollars, five dollars on $55.00. That isn't even ten percent. Are people aware that I pay 2.5% tip out on tables whether I get tipped or not? and that I make 2.13 an hour and I dont particularly like working for FREE!!! I gave them great service, 15% would have been somewhere around 8 dollars... and believe it or not, three dollars is a big deal, and less than 15% is pretty insulting. If you can afford to have drinks and appetizers, and eat out in general, you need to be able to afford to pay your server for the service provided. Less than 10 percent is just insulting, and if I ever recognize some of these people and they sit in my section again... well... I dont know what I'll do.
