Translation
Hi all. I've been lurking here for a while.
Working on my senior thesis, the topic of which is the impossibility of translating - in the conventionally accepted sense of "translation" - classical Chinese poetry into English or even modern Chinese. I've got things pretty well fleshed-out so far, but if anybody knows of anything on the subject that I might find interesting, I'd like to hear about it.
Since part of my argument is that all translators have their own literary biases, I may as well get mine out there: I think that David Hawkes' translation of 红楼梦 should be used as the gold standard for translation, and that Arthur Waley was nothing much to write home about.
Anyway - if anyone has any suggestions, or feels like getting into a discussion or argument on the topic of translation, leave a comment. Cheers!
