Packaging Spotlight 005: Kamikaze Girls

Kamikaze Girls is a candy-coated, comic wonderland of a film all about classic lolita style, yankis and the unexpected friendship that forms between two young women who seem to be polar opposites. It stars Kyoko Fukada (Doronjo in Yatterman) and Anna Tsuchiya (Kiyoha in Sakuran) and is as well performed as it is visually appealing - and when I talk about visual appeal, I mean the cinematography not the leading ladies, though they're both lovely, too.

I love the other cover design with its fluer-de-lis studded borders and black/pink color scheme. It just seems so perfect for the kind of film this is - appropriately over-the-top.

And here are the two leading ladies looking adorable. Honestly, I can't imagine a better cast for Kamikaze Girl. Both Fukada and Tsuchiya perform spot on portrayals of Momoko and Ichigo.

The disc comes with two inserts. The above is a two sided sheet with photo stills and chapter listings.

The second insert is a brief preview of the novel (which is also known as Shimotsuma Monogatari) by Novala Takemoto.

It's a single disc, but it comes with quite a few special features, including interviews with Fukada and Tsuchiya, the PV for Tsuchiya's "Taste My Skin," original Japanese trailers, and an alternative way to watch the film called Sideways Mode.

Sideways Mode is a little similiar to infinifilm - after you've watched the movie through once normally, you can view it again to pick up on a ton of optional tidbits of information. Every time there's an informative extra to view, a tiny cabbage will show up on screen for you to click (if you choose). It's kind of a fabulous feature and well-suited for this kind of movie, which draws from Japanese sub-cultures that might not be immediately familiar to viewers.
