Happy birthday to Hyun Ah, formerly a member of the Korean girl group Wonder Girls, who turns 17 today!

Overview: Wonder Girls is a highly popular Korean pop group composed of five talented young women: Sun Ye, Ye Eun, Sun Mi, So Hee, and Yoo Bin, who replaced Hyun Ah, who left in mid-2007 due to illness. The group made its debut in February 2007, and has earned great success in Korea after their hit single “Tell Me”. Their three singles, four digital singles, and two albums have earned them two Daesangs (“Artist of the Year” awards). They are currently preparing for a US debut. Full Profile
Latest News/Releases: Although they haven’t released anything new since NOW in April, the Wonder Girls are working hard towards their US debut. Currently, an English-language release of “Nobody” is planned, though no date is released, followed by “Tell Me”. They are also confirmed to be participating in the North American branch of the Jonas Brothers’ 2009 World Tour. No Korean releases are expected in the near future.
My Opinion: Um wow. The Wonder Girls are really taking advantage of the current influx of Korean artists into the English market. But. The Jonas Brothers? That’s not good. They’ll become associated with Disney Acts and will lose credibility. I mean, they’ll gain a ton of little girl fans, which might be worth the sacrifice, but the rest of the US market won’t respect them, which is sad because compared to most other girl groups, they are much better, much less cutesy and sweet. I really like the way they produce music and they are all really talented. I especially like Yoo Bin’s rapping, for some reason. I actually don’t care much for their music when Hyun Ah was in the group, although I rather like “Irony”. I’m not partial to “Tell Me” when I’m not listening to it but for some reason when I am I like it. It’s odd. o_O But anyway Wonder Girls is definitely the group to look out for. At least they’ll have their Korean fans here in the US. And random white people like me. xD

Ibaboh (This Fool): This is a song from the Wonder Girls’ debut mini-album, The Wonder Begins, in which Hyun Ah was around to participate. I have to say, this song like many of their others, is terribly addicting and catchy. “Irony” doesn’t seem to be associated with a movie or drama, but it has a little story in the music video, which is always fun. I enjoy this song quite immensely. It’s fun! This is from their debut mini-album so you can’t expect too much vocal-wise, by all things considered the girls actually did quite well, and the song is super catchy, to I like it a lot.
