Super Junior is a thirteen member group under SM Entertainment, which formed in 2001. Initially, twelve members were chosen from SM Entertainment’s annual auditions and other sponsored singing contests, including Chinese member Han Geng chosen out of 3,000 Chinese competitors.

Before the group’s debut in 2005, the members had all had experience as actors, models, DJs, or MCs. Though their pre-debut name was initially O.V.E.R., which stood for “Obey the Voice for Each Rhythm”, they were later renamed Junior, for their young ages at the time of their training. This was later finalized to “Super Junior”, and then Super Junior 05, when it was determined that they would be a rotation group, with older members being switched out for new ones each year.

Super Junior 05 performed for the first time on MNET on September 11, 2005, showcasing their talents in hip-hop dancing, although this show never actually aired and was only released with a Super Junior DVD. Their first television appearance was in November, performing their yet unreleased single, TWINS (Knock Out). A digital single containing this song and a few other tracks was released two days later.

The 12-member band released their first full album, containing “TWINS (Knock Out)” and the other tracks from the single, in December, and it was called Super Junior 05 (TWINS). The album sold nearly 30,000 copies in the first month and made it to the #3 spot on the December charts.

That same month, Super Junior collaborated with super-idol group and fellow label-mate TVXQ, producing a single entitled Show Me Your Love. Show Me Your Love was incredibly successful, selling almost 50,000 copies in less than a month, and become the best-selling record of December 2005. Following the promotions for this single, Super Junior 05 started to promote the second single from their first album, “Miracle”, which later went on to become the group’s first #1 single on various Korea charts and even those of overseas countries such as Thailand.

In May, 2006, as promotions for Miracle ended, SM Entertainment began to plan the first rotation of the members and the debut of Super Junior 06. However, a thirteenth member, Kyuhyun, was added, and the “generation” idea was dropped. The “05” in the name was dropped, and the group became simply Super Junior. Just two days later, the group released their second single, this time with the addition of Kyuhyun’s vocals. The single, entitled U, was uploaded onto the group’s official website, and ultimately exceeded 1.7 million downloads. The CD version was released a few days later and ultimately sold over 80,000 copies.

During this time, their official fan club, E.L.F., an acronym for “Everlasting Friends”, was established. “U” was successful and much requested by fans; it was #1 on the charts for five weeks in a row. Super Junior also won their first award, the Mutizen Song Award, from SBS’s Popular Songs program, in addition to top awards from M.NET’s Countdown. One month later, their next single, “Dancing Out”, which was part of SM Entertainment’s annual summer collaboration, was released, and also attained great popularity, in addition to winning several awards.

The group participated for the first time in an original soundtrack in July by performing a song for the comical drama Rainbow Romance, in which SuJu members Heechul and Kibum had acted. Unfortunately, Heechul was injured in a car accident in August and had to cease activities for a while.

November featured the beginning of Super Junior’s project groups. The first was Super Junior-K.R.Y., which contained the vocal powerhouses Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and Yesung, who had sufficient enough fanbases to stand on their own. Aimed to attract a more mature audience, Super Junior-K.R.Y sang ballads for original soundtracks of dramas and movies, such as Hyena, Snow Flower, and Billy Jean Look at Me. Their first performance was of “The One I Love” on November 6. The group has not released any official, CDs or productions, but is expected to produce more in the future.

At the end of 2006, Super Junior received over seven awards from five different music award ceremonies, including Best New Artist.

In February 2007, the group’s second subgroup, Super Junior-T, made its debut with the trot single Rokkugo. The single was also quite popular with its eccentric music video and its humorous lyrics, charting at #1 in Korea and Thailand and selling nearly 50,000 copies. The group returned as a whole in March for its first participation in an original soundtrack, singing “Success” and “H.I.T.” for the mini-series H.I.T.

Unfortunately, on April 19, the members of Super Junior and two of their managers were caught in a car accident, leaving many of the members moderately injured. Kyuhyun was hospitalized for four months following the incident, while other members were also scratched up and had to be treated. Much of Super Junior and its subunit’s activities had to be suspended for a while, pushing back the release of their second album.

Don’t Don was released on September 20, and even though the release was delayed, more promotion was created as a result, and the album made its debut as #1 on various offline charts. It also reached #1 on the monthly charts for September, selling over 160,000 copies. As the #2 selling album for 2007, it is the group’s best-selling release. Additionally, their first single from the album, “Don’t Don!” became the Mutizen Song as well as the #1 single for several weeks.

In October, SM Entertainment announced the formation of a third sub-group of Super Junior, called Super Junior-M. Composed of Chinese member Han Geng, four other members of Super Junior, and two additional Chinese members, the new subgroup was intended for the Mandarin market. The group achieved considerable success with their album, Me, which gradually achieved top spots on various Asia charts.

Due to the success of their second album, Super Junior as a whole earned their first Daesang, or Artist of the Year award, at the M.NET/KM Music Festival in November, in addition to two other awards. They were also nominated for another Daesang at the 2007 Gold Disc Awards, but were defeated by ballad trio SG Wannabe. They did however, collect and Bonsang and a second award.

Super Junior’s first major tour started in February 2008, and hit nine cities throughout Asia, including Seoul, Nanjing, Beijing, Shanghai, and Bangkok. However, with five of its members busy in China, Super Junior could not pursue further activities, so in order to keep the group from fading into the market, another subgroup was formed: Super Junior-H. Standing for Super Junior-Happy, the group released a mini-album Cooking? Cooking! in early June. The mini-album had two singles, and promotions lasted for four months. The single achieved moderate success, debuting at the #1 spot.

Super Junior made its debut in Japan with a Japanese version of “U” and Korean version of other songs. The single did quite well on the Oricon Charts, appearing in the top ten. The group also appeared for the first time in Malaysia, taking part in the MTV Asia Awards 2008, where they won Favorite Artist Korea, the third SM artists to do so. Super Junior-T earned success in Japan by released their trot single Rokkugo in Japan in collaboration with the group Moeyan. The single made its debut within the top 10 on the Oricon charts. Shortly afterwards, Super Junior released their Don’t Don single “Marry U” in Japan as well, with considerable success, making its debut at the #9 spot.

Super Junior has now ended subgroup activities and is currently working on their third album. It has been announced that the album is slated for release in March 2009 at the earliest. In order to properly promote the album, the group has decided to cease subgroup activities for the moment until promotions are over.

Super Junior-M, short for Mandarin, is a subgroup of the Korean idol group Super Junior. Composed of three Chinese members and four Korean members, the group was formed in response to the growing fan base in China, and is aimed for the Mandarin market.

The group was officially announced in November of 2007, although the members were not yet disclosed. For the most part, the members were kept secret until April 4, when the first of five trailers introducing the members was released. It was gradually revealed the Han Geng, Siwon, Donghae, Kyuhyun, new member Henry, Ryeowook, and new member Zhou Mi would be the lineup for the new subgroup. On the day of the group’s debut, a trailer with all seven members was released. In less than three days, the trailers exceed 1.4 million views.

April 8, 2008 was the debut of the new subgroup, and featured their first live performance at the 8th Annual Music Chart Awards as well as the online release of their first single, a Mandarin version of “U”. On April 23, their debut album, Me, was released in various parts of China, and a Korean version, with three bonus Korean tracks, was released a week later.

Following their debut the group appeared on several variety shows as part of promotion for their album. Funnily enough their appearance increased the viewership ratings of the programs, enough to make the one of the top 3 most viewed shows in all of China. Just one month after their debut, Super Junior-M won their first award at the 5th Annual Music King awards in Macau: Asia’s Most Popular New Group Award.

The group became the new models for the summer season endorsement of the clothing line Semir, using their youthful and sunny atmosphere to advertise the clothing. The group also performed alongside famous artists like Jackey Cheung and Jolin Tsai at the 7th Golden Eagle Opening Ceremony Concert in August. They also performed for the first time in Hong Kong in at the end of December.

Super Junior-M, although temporarily ceasing activities for the production of Super Junior’s third album, is planned to release a second album in the last quarter of 2009.

ASFKJHGKJKA DJHF SUPER JUNIOR AGAIN! And Siwon! *_* Siwon is my FAVORITE! (Although technically he’s tied with Hankyung because I kind of rebound between the two of them.) He’s just got the prettiest face EVER and he is damn RIPPED. And he’s such a nice guy. :O I just…asldhskgk lurve~ I LURVE YOU SIWON OPPA!

*explodes*

Read yesterday’s post HanKyung’s birthday if you’d like to read my SuJu rant. =3

Don’t Don

Well Siwon is in SuJuM but since that subgroup only has 2 singles I thought I’d try not to exhaust them immediately…lol. So here is the first single from their 2nd album! Although it was released one and a half years ago they haven’t released anything new since, which makes me kind of sad. But I am looking forward to their new album! Don’t Don! was not bad but it really wasn’t as great as I kind of hoped it would be…nevertheless I will still by the third! And I have yet to buy their first too. :O ANYWAYS. “Don’t Don!” is SUPER intense~ It has like these really cool dance moves and kind of awesome outfits, and everyone’s hair is radically different. It’s really heavy in rock influences and has a really explosive chorus that doesn’t really have much substance, but on the other hand it’s enjoyable because it has a lot of energy and hype involved. A pretty cool song, and I just love the Super Junior-ness of it. xD; AND IT’S HENRY’S FIRST MYSERIOUS VIOLIN APPEARANCE ZOMG. I remember everyone was like “??!?!??!?! WHO IS THAT?!” and now we know. xD; And also, as you can sing, Hankyung is the master of the hip thrust in the music video lololol.
