Happy birthday to Sonstar, drummer of the Korean pop rock band Cherry Filter, who turns 32 today!!
Cherry Filter was created in 1997 by four long-time friends: Youjeen, the vocalist, Jijonbo, the guitarist, Yaenhead, the bassist, and Sonstar, the drummer and rapper. The band’s early career was composed of performances at clubs and other venues, where their diverse and unique sounds brought them recognition and popularity.
The band’s big break came when they were asked to perform on the soundtrack for the film Ninko Jilo Yoshanashi in 1999. They made their official debut in April 2000, with the release of their first album HEAD UP. They also sang the theme for the Korean horror movie, Bloody Beach in August 2000.
At this time, Youjeen decided to send demo tapes of her solo work to record labels in Japan, and she impressed J, the former bassist of the famous Jrock band Luna Sea. He helped her launch her Japanese career, which became very successful.
The remaining members of Cherry Filter went on hiatus until Youjeen’s return in 2002. Previously, they had primarily been an underground band until this time. They released second album Made in Korea? in August, and with the success of Youjeen’s solo career, its single “Nang Man Go Yang Ee” (“Romantic Cat”) became an instant hit. This song catapulted sales of the album, and Cherry Filter became on of the most popular rock groups. As a result of the album’s success, the band commenced many live tours of both Korea and Japan.
The band released their third album, The Third Eye, in September 2003, featuring the song Orinalda, which was another huge hit. Because of this, they were offered an advertising deal with Coca-Cola for their song “Feel and See”, a highly opportunistic event for the band. The same year, they had the opportunity to open for J during his Red or Dead tour in Japan.
Their career continued with the release of their fourth album, Peace & Rock n’ Roll, two years later. The single from this album, Happy Day, made its debut at the #7 spot on the charts, allowing for high record sales. In September 2007 they released the cover album Rewind, containing completely remade songs, rather than plain covers, of artists such as Um Jung Hwa, Pippi Band, Panic, and Japanese artist Hajime Chitose.
The band’s latest release is a digital single entitled Orange Road from August 2008, which contains two new songs , “Orange Road” and “Rolling Heart”, a Japanese version of the first, and an English version of a second.

KoME I really like Cherry Filter. The vocalist, Youjeen, has an incredibly powerful voice, and I’m usually blown away by her range and ability. It’s impressive, although it’s a little unique. Their music is of the “alternative pop rock” variety, and it’s usually pretty upbeat. I find a lot of their music to be really great so I definitely recommend that you give them a shot. 8D
Orange Road
Haha the music video for this song is adorable! It makes me happy. xD; The song itself is SUPER upbeat and really cool. The music kind of defies the actually poppy-ness of the song, but it’s really good nevertheless. Unfortunately, Youjeen’s style of singing kind of annoys me in this song, but I can kind of get past this and just enjoy the song. Definitely recommended!
