Happy belated birthday to Youjeen, vocalist of the Kpop/Krock band Cherry Filter, who turned 31 on Saturday!!
Cherry Filter was created in 1997 by four long-time friends: Youjeen, the vocalist, Jijonbo, the guitarist, Yaenhead, the bassist, and Sonstar, the drummer and rapper. The band’s early career was composed of performances at clubs and other venues, where their diverse and unique sounds brought them recognition and popularity.
The band’s big break came when they were asked to perform on the soundtrack for the film Ninko Jilo Yoshanashi in 1999. They made their official debut in April 2000, with the release of their first album HEAD UP. They also sang the theme for the Korean horror movie, Bloody Beach in August 2000.
At this time, Youjeen decided to send demo tapes of her solo work to record labels in Japan, and she impressed J, the former bassist of the famous Jrock band Luna Sea. He helped her launch her Japanese career, which became very successful.
The remaining members of Cherry Filter went on hiatus until Youjeen’s return in 2002. Previously, they had primarily been an underground band until this time. They released second album Made in Korea? inAugust, and with the success of Youjeen’s solo career, its single “Nang Man Go Yang Ee” (“Romantic Cat”) became an instant hit. This song catapulted sales of the album, and Cherry Filter became on of the most popular rock groups. As a result of the album’s success, the band commenced many live tours of both Korea and Japan.
The band released their third album, The Third Eye, in September 2003, featuring the song Orinalda, which was another huge hit. Because of this, they were offered an advertising deal with Coca-Cola for their song “Feel and See”, a highly opportunistic event for the band. The same year, they had the opportunity to open for J during his Red or Dead tour in Japan.
Their career continued with the release of their fourth album, Peace & Rock n’ Roll, two years later. The single from this album, Happy Day, made its debut at the #7 spot on the charts, allowing for high record sales. Their latest release is the cover album Rewind, released in September 2007, containing complete remade songs, rather than plain covers, of artists such as Um Jung Hwa, Pippi Band, Panic, and Japanese artist Hajime Chitose.

KoME Cherry Filter really is a great band. Initially I didn’t approve of Youjeen’s singing style but it really is unique and sometimes just downright awesome. I think the entire band is extremely talented and together have created some really great music. I urge you to try them out, if you haven’t already.
Romantic Cat
This was the song that caused Cherry Filter to make it big….This is the first time I’m hearing it. Youjeen actually sings a little too deep for me, I think; initially, anyways. And this song lacks the pep and the explosions that a lot of the band’s other songs have. I kind of don’t like it as much as other songs, but it’s not bad really, at all. I can see how this song made them strike it big. It’s kind of cool in a way.

Romantic Cat Youjeen was born and raised in Japan, though she is an ethnic Korean. She attended a Korean school in Japan, but she is fluent in both Japanese and English, in addition to Korean. It was at this school that she met Jijonbo, Yaenhead, and Sonstar, who later became her bandmates in 1997 as the band Cherry Filter.
The group moved to Korea for their musical career, and slowly gained popularity. After the release of the band’s first album, HEAD UP in 2000, Youjeen, encouraged by her bandmates, decided to send out demo tapes of her singing to various record companies in Japan, hoping for a solo career there.
Her demos attracted the attention of Luna Sea’s ex-bassist J, and she was soon signed under his record label, Teichiku, and made her live debut at the FIRE WIRE event on January 27, 2001. Her first single, Hey Jerks, was released on the first of March; the lyrics were written by J and the music composed by Foo Fighter’s ex-guitarist Franz Stahl.
After the release of her second single, Someday, Youjeen performed in the Fire Wire 2001 Burn Seven Cities Burns event, in which J and several other artists also appeared. She then released her first solo album, The Doll, in July. The album was produced by J, who also wrote many of the lyrics. Afterwards, J returned to focusing on his solo career, and Youjeen switched producers to Gary Stout, a renowned producer in Japan.
She then released her third single, Beautiful Days, which contained one track, “Seagull”, which was Youjeen’s first self-written and self-composed song. Beautiful Days became rather successful, ranking in the top 50 of the best selling singles.
Fake, her fourth single, was released in March 2002, and then Youjeen held her first solo live performance. She then took a short break, and the reappeared at one of J’s concerts during a tour in July.
Youjeen than switched producers again, to guitarist Shin Moruhime, and with his help she released a fifth single, Daydreamin’, and then her second album, Bewitch. This album contained several more tracks that Youjeen wrote and composed herself. At the same time, Youjeen had returned to Korea to help release Cherry Filter’s second album, Made in Korea?.
Youjeen released a DVD containing music videos entitled Fly. After this release, she returned to Korea and now continues to work with Cherry Filter. Her solo career is currently on hiatus. However, she has released a compilation album, BEST of Youjeen, in January 2007.

Wiki.theppn,
KoME I don’t know anything about Youjeen’s solo work. Personally, I don’t like her singing style enough to like her solo. It seems to really fit in with Cherry Filter’s style, but I don’t know what her style type would be. In any case, I realllllly looked hard for her songs but nobody had them. X_x; If anyone does and would like to share, feel free! I’d like to try it out too.
In the meantime, I’m going to just post two videos for you, just to give you (and me) a general idea of her style.
Hey Jerks
Okay, apparently, Youjeen style is like Cherry Filter’s but heavier. Lol. This song is like a heavy rock style with intense vocals and epic verses. Maybe this is J’s influence. She should have just stick with Cherry Filter though, I think. This is too intense. Lol. Well, her voice can handle it, despite the far overpowering instrumentals. It just kind of seems all over the place. x_x;
Watch PV? Daydreamin’
This song is a little more poppy but I really have to say, her screaming in the whole video is just annoying. It’s not really music. It’s like screaming with guitars. Geh. I don’t have anything else to say.
