There are some on the left
who will never be happy. Ever. They just won't. Liberal guilt clogs their system until any expression or experience of joy by themselves or another is suspect as taking advantadge of someone else. Maybe that's true. French Philosophy certainly thinks so, except the French can still be happy for themselves while being disgusted with the happiness of others. At any rate the best thing to do with the perpetually grumpy leftist is to keep them perpetually drunk and/or stoned and away from the levers of power. In fact we should make a rule, if you can't smile and feel good about yourself at least once a day you should not have any policy impact on anything ever.
