USPS Woes

I need help here, from anyone in the know.

I really wanted to set up a P.O. Box in Maryland and have our mail from here forwarded to it until we find a place to live. The lady at the post office here told me that in order to attain said P.O. Box I would have to show proof of Maryland residency. Which I won't have. Which IS WHY I NEED THE P.O. BOX.

So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this as to not miss any bills (WOULDN'T SAY I MISSED THEM LOL) or mail. I don't want to have our mail forwarded to any of our friends' residences as that would just be a terrible mess that would likely never get sorted out in the end, knowing our oh-so-efficient postal service.

I was thinking perhaps they could hold our mail at our local office OR we could get a P.O. Box here and have our mail forwarded once we have an address (which would have us still getting late mail).

Anyone have any ideas?

I can't talk to anyone else at USPS right now or I'll lose my mind.

EDIT: Thanks to Julia and Lesley for the suggestion of MBE/UPS Store -- turns out they have no problem setting this up for me! (And even have more service options than USPS)
