Well, my medium-term housing situation is settled now…. After much negotiation, the hotel owner agreed to give me a room for 30 days at 12.66 euros a day (380 euros in all). Perhaps there would be better rates available in some other part of Athens, but I think that’s a really good deal for Plaka, the area that I’m staying. It’s nice, quiet, and close to everything. And I really don’t have days and days to go searching all over the city looking for deals.
Anyway, this is a different room from the one I was first in. The guy wanted 400 euros for that one, probably because it has the view of the Acropolis and it’s one of their big money-makers. But apart from the view, the room I have now is better in every way. It’s a little bit bigger and has more storage space, with a wardrobe and shelves and a table. So anyway, I’m happy. I’ll spend the next month studying Greek pretty intensively, and exploring the areas around Athens. Marathon, Salamis, and Plataea (ancient battle sites) are all close by, and there’s some islands that I could visit on day trips. Or I could stay one night and come back the next day, since that would fit in the budget. After one month, I’ll probably put my large bags in storage somewhere, and go roaming around other parts of Greece. It would be nice if the weather is warm by then! It’s still quite cold and raining a lot. That means, I should also check out all the museums this month, because that would be a good way to spend rainy days.
