People had told me that Gurgaon is one of the most developed places in India, much more advanced than the rest of Delhi. But I was still surprised yesterday when I went there and actually saw it. It has a really nice skyline, with mile after mile of glittering high-rise apartments. A few times I almost felt like I was in Bangkok! Or, to state it more accurately, it looks like little sections of Bangkok plopped down in the Haryana plains. You’ll be driving along a wide, dusty road, past paan shops, cycle rickshaws, and old women carrying bricks, and look up and see a giant shopping mall like the Siam Discovery Center, or a gorgeously landscaped golf course/country club. There’s so much new construction going on, it will be amazing to see what it becomes in the next few years.
I went there to visit a guy that I used to know in Mussoorie a few years ago. We hadn’t stayed in contact, but a few weeks ago I met him quite by chance at a restaurant in GK-1, where he’s working now. As an interesting side-note, he and his fiancée are the first cohabitating couple that I’ve ever met in India. Of course I know people who spend the afternoon at each other’s apartments, but I had never met any who openly live together.
