Well, if it's really seriously established that CCS|SxS are indeed both dead, I think this will be just how far my interest in TRC will have gone. I will certainly read it till the end, of course, after all I've been following it since 2004, but no fangirling or excitedly awaiting it: it will be just another manga title I read, that's all, not a fav or anything special, since the one only thing I refused to accept, since the very start, was for CCS|SxS to be harmed in the process. Which seems to have happened in the end.
Anyway, no matter how many decisions Syaoran took, CCS|SxS suffered for every single one of them...to think they would finally die of it is just too painful a thought :( The one last ultimate chance for SxS to be ok would be that Watanuki's real parents 'killed' and replaced by SxS? Or did Watanuki just appear from thin air as a 7 years old child already? In that case, it would be different, and then it would explain Yuuko's words in the first volume of XXXHolic, where she said "Your family is a bit peculiar. You don't live with your real parents. The people with which you share a same roof do not have the same last name as you do". Meaning the 'parents' he is living with RIGHT NOW are SxS (even though he doesn't remember since he gave up those memories).
It's strange how everyone started pitying Watanuki, while my thoughts went somewhere else: if Watanuki replaces him, does it means it was already established that Syaoran would never be coming back, ever, in his home world? Or is it the contrary? Since Syaoran is so scared about Watanuki disappearing, does it mean his 'mission' is coming to an end and he will come back, which would erase Watanuki's, his replacement, existence? And also, why the need for a replacement if the rewinding is done in another world? Does it mean that by 'Time rewinding', it's actually Time rewinding in all the existing worlds, not only CLow Country? The Time was rewind in all the 'Universe'? Or does that simply confirm that there is some kind of special connection between Clow and the CCS worlds?
Since Watanuki was essentially created to replace Shao Jr. he should appear to SxS. It could be that they might have given him away and those surrogate parents died instead of SxS. Or everything is a big fat lie. It already but still...
Watanuki lived in an apartment after his parents died and the manager took care of him. Building is similar to the apartment in Chobits so Chitose should be the one taking care of him.
I think that Watanuki's existence is so that the TRC gang can continue to pursue FWR. Like it said, Shaoran Jr. can't really pay it himself so Watanuki has to through his own existence. If Watanuki dies its game over.
Watanuki lived in an apartment after his parents died and the manager took care of him. Building is similar to the apartment in Chobits so Chitose should be the one taking care of him.
Indeed, since this information only appeared once in the manga, it didn't immediately came to my mind; in vol4, a young Watanuki tells Bone-kun that he didn't have parents, which is why he was living with the caretaker and a tutor and that, even though they weren't related by blood, they were like family to him. Chitose being the caretaker is only an unconfirmed guess of the fans though, and his 'tutor' is unknown. Also, while being young he started living in a flat on his own, even though his 'family' wasn't too sure about it since he was still only a kid (still another parallel point with 'Syaoran', who started living alone when he was only 9, even while being cared for by the Royal Family)
Still, Watanuki's dead parents and SxS being one and the same is strange: since the start of both series and specially in those latest chapters, they were mentioned by several people but none gave me the feeling they were talking about deceased SxS.
But the strangest thing of it all, is that Watanuki (and it was repeated many times in the manga) lost his parents when he was a young child, like 7-8 years old: does it means SxS died immediately after Watanuki was 'born'? What is the 'use' of this replacement then? FWR said 'Syaoran's' parents will be pained by this, not that they would die on the spot!
And the old woman in volume2 said that "You can feel relieved, your parents rest in peace. It was a terrible accident and they died in order to protect you. But they do not feel pain. Together, their souls are in peace." We all know that SxS won't just die 'like that' from an 'accident': Clamp stated quite clearly that they both had the capacity to live for hundreds of years if they wished to. What kind of amazing power/enemy could have befallen on them and which would have killed them both? Protecting Watanuki? What for? Why would he be in danger? He is not really an active part of FWR's plans...he is only a painful 'result' of Syaoran's choices.
The only thing i can comment on in your questions (because i emidiatly started running through to fill in gaps) was that time didn't necesarily rewind everywhere...from whatever point in time Shaoran stopped existing in his real world Watanuki was plugged in...which means instead of him going to Yuuko's shop as a kid because of what was told to him Watanuki eventually did...in fact watanuki apparently could have done that same thing twice because he did wish at one point to forget everything to help Shaoran. I think that at some point in time Watanuki learned what happened and that is where that wish came about.
Now the other reference to Watanuki just being plugged in to what would have been Shaoran's spot was when he fell out of the window he woke up to Yuuko standing by her bed looking at him in the exact same way that Shaoran did when he got returned after the 7 days.
If we follow this logic, then we saw several people traveling through dimensions, starting with Fye and Kurogane: they've both 'stopped existing' in their respective worlds but there was no such a need as a replacement for them. Actually, 'Syaoran' has been missing for years already! But this replacement was only born when 'rewinding time' came in the story...
About things happening twice for Watanuki too, this is an interesting thought: their would be, then, Past1 that he spoke about (his parents dying when he was a kid blablabla) and Past2 in which he is SxS' son and knows about himself being Syaoran's replacement...but he forgot Past2 since he gave away his memories and only remembers Past1? That would confirm further that his 'parents' in Past1 and Past2 are different I guess. In which case, he must have left SxS' side immediately after loosing his memories and started leading his life with only Past1 in mind. He then met Yuuko very soon after giving up on his memories and this is the start of XXXHolic. I like this option, even though this is completely impossible since Watanuki came to existence only when Syaoran's rewind the Time~ The question now is did he came to existence with a past or did his 'life story' started only the day he came to existence (=from day zero to 7 years old, everything is blank)? Again, SxS dying right after he was born still makes no sens, how could he have inherited or learned anything from people he spent no time with? Did him being a replacement went as far as modifying the Past even further, like 'Syaoran's' 7 years of life with his parents were also replaced by Watanuki in History?
I did thought about the scenario that maybe Watanuki's "real" parents died in an accident and in which, through the wish of "Syaoran", Watanuki instead of being an orphan, he entered in the pictures and taking the place of Syaoran and becomes CCS|SxS's son. That could be another possibility but I guess that would be Yuuko "finding" a replacement for CCS|SxS's son, so that she can grant "Syaoran" wish to rewind time. And which lead to the whole "past 1" and "past 2" thingy... he gave up his memories about "past 2" and thus only remember the death of his "real parents". Though there's one slight flaw when he couldn't remember his parents' name [not even his "real" one??]
Though even if we follow through with Watanuki is indeed born from thin air by Syaoran's desire [which unfortunately, is leading to that direction x__x BUT WTH would Watanuki looks like Eriol with black hair and blue eyes o__O]. I don't think CCS|SxS died "immediately" after he was born. As you said, it wouldn't make any sense why he would have the "body memory" of his father teaching him how to cook. They [Syaoran/Sakura/Watanuki]live together as a family as a replacement of "Syaoran" BUT something happen to them later on and plus it is not explicitly said that Watanuki "lost" his parents at the age of 7/8.
BUT STILL... in the end, why don't CLAMP leave CCS|SxS alone with the happy ending ;____; sadly it is not something I didn't think of [something bad happen to them] BUT hearing that this is "really" the sadist plan about Watanuki's true identity when they start xxxholic is just too violent to accept. They even going as far as "teasing" us with the whole "fake Sakura's staff on the first volume" and then the whole WHO his parents really were T_______T
I think that CCS Sakura and Syaoran aren't dead, but that this is all a result of Watanuki's payment. He will have grown up with Sakura and Syaoran, until the time when it came to pay the price, and make the wish, from Yuuko. Now, here, two possible things may have happened: - He paid more than just his memories, he also paid with his relationships. Thus, there was no way for CCS Sakura and Syaoran to once again fill their role as his parents, and he would be passed on to another couple. -Or- - When he paid his memories, like with Clone Sakura in Tsubasa, he could never regain them. Thus, as soon as he was told that Sakura and Syaoran were his parents, he would forget again. Thus, there would be no choice but to feed him the story of 'dead parents', and let his live with others, since it was impossible for their life to go back to the way it was.
As for the whole spirit thing, that may have been conjured by Sakura/Syaoran themselves, as a way to reassure Watanuki and make sure that he move on from fretting over his 'dead' parents, and that he may fulfil his destiny.
As for the couple Watanuki's staying with, part of me very much wants to say (due to the 'tutor') that it's Eriol and Mizuki, but that may be just random theorising.
To continue from the couple, we are not sure it is an actual couple he lives with...he lives in the apartments Chitose runs...and we know that Holic and Kobato are in the same universe as is Legal Drug and CCS. There are panels where we see this. Holic has the Green Drugstore, which we later see in the background of Kobato and Touya is working there. Thus i think he just lives in the same building as Chitose and Kobato and Chitose would keep and eye on him from time to time. I really dont' remember him mentioning a couple took care of him. Everyone in the building would have different last names, that's where that line would come from if they are all tenants.
My assumption was that Watanuki appeared (was born) and began to live with Sakura and Shaoran from CCS at the point in the line of time a bit before Sakura began her purification ceramony (thus it's a little higher up in time than when Shaoran first arrived). So that means that Watanuki had to be living with his "parents" for at least 7 days, but more than that because he had to fill in the empty spot in History Shaoran left behind by traveling back in time. What we did not seen had yet to be writen, but the two instances in History which Shaoran had met with Yuuko had to be filled, not because someone had to exist in Shaoran's place for the rest of his life, but because two points in Yuuko's existence and Maru's and Moro's had to be reenacted with someone visiting the shop. Just like someone had to be at Shaoran's house with his parents while his mother had the dream and possibly even with Shaoran was trained, but they wouldn't follow the same course of action with Watanuki as they did with Shaoran, they would know it had already been done...somehow...it's altering history that caused the need for Watanuki.
Does it mean that by 'Time rewinding', it's actually Time rewinding in all the existing worlds, not only CLow Country? The Time was rewind in all the 'Universe'? Or does that simply confirm that there is some kind of special connection between Clow and the CCS worlds?
This is exactly what I was thinking. I would have to assume that time was either reset across the whole universe or just in the CCS/Yuuko and Clow Country worlds, hence then the need for Watanuki at all.
I would actually assume that CCS|SxS would be powerful enough to notice the time shift, also explaining why FWR or Yuuko (can't remember) saying his decision would cause his parents pain.
Either way, this chapter and the mind-boggling explanations behind it are making me go cross eyed.
I will be a very pissed off fangurl if CLAMP have just officially killed off CCS|SxS. If they truly have, they better give a damn good explanation for it.
The whole memory thing with Watanuki has always made me go WAITWUT? He does seem to remember learning some things from his family, and that they died, but he doesn't remember any time he spent with them or what they look like? His lost memories always threw me for a loop; I didn't really get it.
Well...truth is I'm having a hard time believing the rewinding of the Time would affect every single existing worlds...actually I do not think the CCS/Holic world time was rewind at all.
But on the other side, 'Syaoran' has been missing for years already, and nothing happened in his home world during this time, but when he decided to rewind Time then his existence in his Home World was violently affected and led to Watanuki's birth...why? He is missing anyway, why should the fact Time is rewound in another dimension have such terrible consequence on another world?
Aahh~ I'm tired already. I think I will just sit back and watch from afar while Clamp expose the whole thing.

You may be right about this and I rather hope you are. At least CLAMP is finally filling in the blanks... I guess.
