New York Cabbies 8/4/10

Apr 29, 2010 21:11

Everyone who's ever watched a cop movie set in the big apple knows NY cabbies are the craziest drivers in the world. Anyone who's ever been here knows otherwise, the drivers rocket along under no discernible speed limit and not held sway by any perceivable law. The driver of our car today was 15 minutes into his career and bellowing directions out of the window of his car, which was doing 120 down the highway may I add, to the driver of the car that was keeping pace spitting distance to my right.

Opulence is a standard here, the homes we passed on the way to our destination were grand and luxurious, all high walls and gold wrought gates to towering three floor mansions with five cars. Sand must be a wealthy commodity for this fledgeling power, there's no oil here for us to shake our sabre at.

A mall by their name is a small township of it's own right. So many janitors they have one in each toilet just to make it feel more clean. It's been westernized, heavily enough that you could mistake their culture for our own, other than the warnings everywhere that your clothes should be "respectful" and that knees and shoulders should be covered. The police are not as subtle as they think

There are an astounding number of pretty women here, but you feel like you tempt fate just thinking of admitting the fact.

Now, off to dream, in my tiny room that's larger than my own so far away back home, with crickets to lull me to rest, safe inside the compound that is my self imposed prison.

What a world we pick for ourselves.

"What if everything around you, isn't quite how it seems?"
