eco-sexuals

Chicago’s Redeye reports on “so called eco-sexuals” in Wednesday, May 9’s issue (51). Redeye goes on to explain the difficulties that many vegan and vegetarian singles face in their search for partners. Aside from my usual complaint to the search for partners as a means to couplehood, I take issue with the way sexuality gets used many times in American culture.

I accept and appreciate the difficulty that vegetarians and vegans face in finding a partner with similar mores, but too often the feeling that social pressure and difficulty in finding someone is used to justify an alt-sex (alt-orientated). At the heart of alt-sex is a restructuring of how one places his/herself in relation to other romantic partners. The decision to not eat meat does not make one more or less likely to blur or change the lines on the sex, nor gender that s/he feels drawn to. It could be argued that veganism deconstructs masculinity, but I would not buy it. To be alt-sex is to maintain freedom from the gay-straight binary, something that animal ethics does not.
