She’s running. She’s running through some place dark, wet - is that a smell of grass? She hears a dog bark. She turns around and there’s that face. Blonde hair, hazel eyes, a haunted smile. Is her fear visible? Is he really going to do this? Another bark, a pain, a final gasp. She closes her eyes to suppress the pain - the doubt, the truth.
………
The blonde pulled into the station 7 minutes late. Turning off the ignition, Scribbs stares straight ahead for a passing moment before unbuckling herself from the seat and opening the door. Locking it behind her, she slowly drags her feet in the direction of the main doors not looking forward to the verbal assault she will most likely receive from her partner.
--
“So, what do we have?”
Ash didn’t bother looking up from the file in her hand when the other detective finally made her appearance.
“You’re late.”
Scribbs rolls her eyes slightly, and picks up the coffee mug that was placed on her desk by; who she presumes was the annoyed looking woman in front of her.
“I had a late night. Danny made a visit.”
This caught the older detective’s attention.
“The same Danny that you broke it off with?”
“Yep.”
“The Danny that I highly disliked?”
“That Danny.”
“The Danny who called me a nag and showed up at your door at half past nine pissed, while we were going over a file. The one that said I needed to get laid because I was so wound up?”
“Ash-“
“You slept with him, ay?”
Scribbs stared intently into Ash’s eyes trying to read the emotions burning through, but she came up with nothing. She sighed and averted her gaze to the files on the brunette’s desk.
“What case do we have, Ash?”
Ash looked pointedly at her before handing the file to Scribbs and getting up from her desk chair.
“Two brunette females stabbed 9 times in the chest, both in parks, but different sides of town.”
“Are they linked?”
“Well if I knew that already we wouldn’t be investigating this would we?”
Ash was already ahead of her as Scribbs sighed and made to follow her partner outside to the car.
……….
It was 3am when Ash was rudely awaken by a loud consistent - impatient - knocking coming from her front door.
--
The previous day, and night had been very long and stressful. Two victims were found stabbed and gagged the same way but on opposite sides of town.
They had officially linked the two cases together when they found that one of the main suspects; Travis Watson was actually married to both of them.
The two women; Melanie and Nikki, had found out about each other two days prior to their attacks when Nikki had called her husbands office and found out he was out to lunch with his wife, Melanie.
Both couples had only met 4 weeks before they had gotten married. Travis Watson had been charged previously multiple times for fraud.

And that is one of the many reasons Ash does background checks on men before she dates them.
“Ash, open your door.”
Inside her flat, Ash was staring at the door silently contemplating letting her partner inside. There were many reasons that would have brought Scribbs here this early in the morning. Most of them she didn’t even want to think about. And besides, Scribbs knows how she feels about being woken up too early. Getting at least 7 hours of sleep - when actually given the chance to - is a must. And Scribbs knows that, so she should never -
“I know you’re there. I can practically hear your rules about getting enough hours of sleep swirling inside that head of yours.”
Sighing rather loudly, Ash unlocked the door and chain before turning back around to let the other woman inside.
“So what is so important that you had to wake me up at three in the morning?”
“I don’t see why we can’t be together anymore.” Scribbs got straight to the point. There was no use in small talk since Ash was already in a foul mood.
Ash’s mouth opened slightly in shock, eyes slightly narrow and her nose scrunched up in confusion. She tried to think of something to reply with but came up with nothing; instead she sat down on the couch putting her head in her hands.
“I mean, you were obviously jealous when I told you that Danny had made a visit.”
“He called me a nag!”
“I didn’t shag him.”
“I didn’t think you did.”
“Of course you did, Ash. Every time I mention someone I know you immediately think that.”
“I was not jealous, Scribbs.”
Nodding slightly, the blonde quickly sat herself beside the other woman before she could make a move to get up.
They both sat there for what seemed an eternity before Ash spoke up quietly.
“It would be too complicated. It was too complicated. If we were ever caught -“
“We wouldn’t be caught.”
“Scribbs, we work for detectives, we ARE detectives. Everyone would soon find out. Plus, it would interfere with our jobs.”
“Don’t you think it’s interfering more now, that we aren’t together?”
Ash was silent for a moment, obviously thinking something through.
“But what if we were to break up? Then it would be worse, and you would have to transfer and -“
“Why would I have to transfer?”
“See? That’s my point. We’d end up arguing -“
“We already do.”
“Quit interrupting me!”
She shifted slightly on the couch to turn and face Scribbs. When Scribbs caught her eyes she looked down at their fingers that were linked together. She hadn’t even been aware of that. She smiled briefly before looking up again.
“We can be together.”
“Really?” Scribbs brightened instantly.
“But we are going to have to set some rules.”
Scribbs groaned.
“Why am I not surprised?”
Glaring at Scribbs, the dark haired woman stood back up starting to pace.
“First thing, we do not let on that we are together. No touching me in a non-friendly manner. No secret looks, no snogging -“
“Not even in the loo?”
“Well, maybe that would be okay - No! None of that, period.”
“Then I don’t see how that is any different than it was before, Ash.”
Scribbs was now standing as well, becoming annoyed.
“Ah, but you haven’t heard my most important rule.”
“And what is that? Completely ignoring the other? Because I’m pretty sure that’s what we - mmph”
She was cut off before she could go any further by Ash’s lips connecting with hers.
Sighing happily into the kiss, Scribbs pulled Ash down onto the couch maneuvering so that she was straddling her thighs.
As she was lightly trailing her fingers up Ash’s pyjama top, the other woman suddenly pulled her lips away.
“Maybe we can rethink the no kissing rule.”
Scribbs gasped mockingly.
“Is Kate Ashurst really striking one of her ‘set-in-stone’ rules?”
“If you keep kissing me like that I might have to come up with a whole different set of rules.”
“Yes ma’am, I’ll get right on that then.”
