The 1950s dress is actually under construction! YAY!!! I will hopefully be getting okasan's help with pinning the hem on Sunday. *crosses fingers* I really want to get this one done and out of the way. I still need to make a petticoat of some sort, and procure a bag and possibly a hat. I'm thinking of making a taffeta petticoat--just for the rustle factor. We'll see. It depends on if I can afford the fabric. Otherwise I will be making do with the eyelet "petticoat" (skirt) I wore with the
original Minerva Harper outfit. I think it will poof out much better with the 1950s as that one is made of calico, and the black skirt is a sorta heavy-ish twill. I also need to make the bolero, but I already have the fabric for it. In the end I went with a vintage repro bolero that has those fantabulous batwing cuffs on the sleeves. The dress is brown with a cream scrolly/braidy pattern and the bolero is a cream solid with the brown fabric used for the cuffs. I think it will look spiffy. I'm not using a specific pattern for the dress--it's a pastiche of a modern bodice from a formal gown (that is spot on in style for the era) and three lengths of fabric pleated or gathered on for the skirt.
Once that is done I will move on to a half-mourning gown to wear to Hal's lecture. I have this grey and black plaid that has dark teal and mauve lines running through it. I will use it for the "vest" part and cuffs of the bodice (similar to
TV463), and to line and trim the overskirt (I'm thinking
TV303) and trim the underskirt. Since I already have the underpinnings, I'm thinking I should be able to whip that out quickly.
Because after that I need to get going on the 18th century outfit. I'm still planning on frock coat, breeches, vest, and shirt (in that order). I already have fabric for all of it in the stash, and patterns, too. And I will finally have an excuse to wear my nice black and grey Cavalier hat. Yay!!!
After that I'm taking a break. If I can actually get myself to make all of that I will be in need of one.
