The only thing I have on the writers' defense is that Cole generally flirted with evil, but even that is not enough.
So did the Halliwells and Leo. Yet, their flirtations with evil are either dismissed, excused or forgiven. Not Cole's. And the writers don't really have an excuse for what they had done to him, considering that he was a victim of possession by the Source in the first place. The Halliwells never bothered to find out how Cole became the Source. Instead, they jumped to conclusions and killed him. Which makes them guilty of murder.
