Some small progress made on The Fernery and Fellow Passengers in the last couple of nights. Given that one is a botanical ghost story and the other one's a fantasy about waiting for a train I have no idea why my dreaming brain offered me a lengthy nightmare of seventies gangsters and floating statuary. It was, kind of, Get Carter meets de Chirico, and exceedingly unpleasant (ears and screwdrivers do NOT belong together). That would need several dozen filters before I'd consider using it as inspiration.
Books acquired recently: Jenny Uglow's A Little History of British Gardening; John Howard's Numbered as Sand or the Stars (if you're reading John, many thanks); Night Terrors: The Collected Ghost Stories of E. F. Benson; The Waste Land. I don't think I'll be bored for a week or two! There's also Anansi Boys, but I can't remember if it's any good, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (my flawed memory of this one sums it up as "tosspots on acid". I might be wrong). They'll be at the bottom of the pile.
