Another one bites the dust...

What a tragedy--choosing Rogers Park over Lincoln Park. What an awful name, too. I would never stand to be called "Colette Triplecock"!

New town house (and marriage proposal) in Rogers Park

"Damen Trebilcock moved to Chicago from Iowa just two years ago. So he was relying heavily on his girlfriend, Colette Chambers, to help him in his search for a new home. She suggested Emerson Point, a town-house development in Rogers Park. Damen liked her recommendation--and proposed to her.

"Colette grew up in the Chicago area. And she has lived in the city for more than five years," Trebilcock said. "I initially thought we should limit our search to Lincoln Park, Old Town and Wicker Park.

"But when she saw an ad for Emerson Point, she was blown away by the size and price of the town homes," he said. "She convinced me to take a look. Without her, I might have spent half a million dollars in one of those other neighborhoods and not gotten near the square footage that we enjoy up here."

Dubin Residential, the developer, plans 26 units; just a few remain for sale. Base prices range from $269,900 to $309,900. Sizes range from 1,590 to 2,006 square feet. Units have 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and attached 2-car garages. Standard amenities include central air conditioning and living rooms with gas fireplaces.

When Damen was beginning to look for a new home, he told Colette he wanted a place with good appreciation potential. And there was one more criterion that he initially didn't tell her.

"At the time, she didn't know that I was also planning to propose to her," he said. "So I knew I needed a place that would be big enough for her two dogs."

With three levels of space, there is plenty of room for the dogs: a chow and a shar-pei/rottweiler mix. In February, the couple moved into their new home--a 2,006-square-foot split-level design. A 1-1/2-story living room overlooks the kitchen/dining room.

"We love the big, open kitchen," Trebilcock said. With the split-level design, they walk up half a flight of stairs from the garage to reach the main floor. A half-flight down from the garage, there is a den, which the couple is using as a television room. On the top floor, they opted to replace the study with a full bath to give each bedroom its own bathroom.

"By car, Rogers Park is just 15 minutes further north than if we had bought in Lincoln Park," Damen said. "We still enjoy all the fun of the city and going downtown."
