The Coastal Commission's longtime executive director, Peter Douglas, was unmoved by the governor's appeal.
“I just don't understand how you protect coastal resources by destroying them,” Douglas said.
Environmentalists were outraged.
“It's tragic,” said Mark Massara of the Sierra Club. “Clearly the governor has forsaken his environmental legacy.”
Jim Moriarty, executive director of the Surfrider Foundation, called the governor's stance “un-Californian.”
Schwarzenegger's attempt to influence the commission sets up a dramatic political showdown between the governor and environmentalists when commissioners meet Feb. 6 in Oceanside to decide on the project.
