Leto turning into a worm is kind of a culmination of the whole Kwisatz Haderach idea. Jessica screwed up when she bore Paul a generation too early, which screwed up the projections and centuries old plans of the Bene Gesserit for their Shortening of the Way. Leto was the culmination of that failure of the Bene Gesserit. Ironically, the biggest failure in the eyes of the Bene Gesserit is the biggest hope humanity could get.
Personally, I loved God Emperor of Dune. For me, that's the turning point in the series, where it transforms from an ecological-action packed-philosophical soft science fiction into a real masterpiece of thought. The way Herbert explored the ideas of clairvoyance and prescience through the Worm is genius.
Now, I can understand that people weren't expecting such a change of pace and style - but it is what it is. Dune is still the best novel in the series, I can agree with that; but what the sequels lose in readability they gain in depth.
Regarding Brian Herbert - he's a total and utter asshole; IMHO. I mean, he turned an artwork into cheap science fiction a la Star Trek. The House prequels, I could live with (though, in writing quality and style, he's not half as good as FH) but the Butlerian Jyhad and those other pieces of crap he managed to spew out? Pffh.
Sorry for the long rant. Just felt the need to share :P
Hehe! That's fine, bak. =p Like I (think I) said above, I haven't read anything else but the House trilogy, so I'm not privy to the (expected) downward spiral of the continuation of the series. And I can see the philosophical side of things... It's been quite a while since I gave it a shot. I may go back and reread GEoD. Who knows? Maybe I'll like it this time around? *shrug*
