For the first time, the Laurence Olivier Awards ceremony will be broadcast live this year, with viewers able to watch all the awards and performances exclusively on www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk from 18:30 on Sunday 21 March 2010.
Theatreland’s most prestigious event, the Laurence Olivier Awards, was filmed until 2003 and televised after the event on BBC2. Since then the awards have been celebrated behind closed doors. This year’s ceremony at Park Lane’s Grosvenor House Hotel will mark the first time ever that the ceremony has been broadcast live, with UK and international viewers able to tune into Official London Theatre’s dedicated player to see the winners announced.
Nominated stars including Jude Law, Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Juliet Stevenson, Samuel West and Ken Stott have confirmed their attendance at the glamorous event, which will be presented by actor Anthony Head, who is currently appearing in Six Degrees Of Separation at the Old Vic.
Also among the nominees this year are Gillian Anderson, James Earl Jones, Mark Rylance, Imelda Staunton, Mackenzie Crook, Melanie Chisholm, Patina Miller, Tony Sheldon, Maureen Lipman and Rowan Atkinson.
This year’s ceremony will also unveil the winner of the brand new Audience Award, as voted for by the readers of Official London Theatre. Shortlisted shows Wicked, War Horse, The Phantom Of The Opera, We Will Rock You and Billy Elliot The Musical are currently battling it out to be crowned the West End’s favourite long-running show. It is not too late to help influence the result; voting remains open until 17 March, with over 36,000 votes cast so far.
If you can’t wait until 21 March, get a taste of the glamour to come by watching Official London Theatre’s new video, which takes a look at some of the nominated shows.
In advance of the ceremony, all the nominees will gather at the Haymarket Hotel next Tuesday 2 March for a Nominees’ Celebration. Official London Theatre will be bringing you full coverage of the event, including live tweeting, video and exclusive photos of all the attendees.
In addition to the live streaming of the Laurence Olivier Awards, we will also be tweeting and reporting live on the night. Join us at 18:30 on 21 March for a ringside seat.
