Starsky & Hutch Fanfiction - Poll

To any who stop by, welcome to my latest and truly unscientific poll about Starsky & Hutch fanfiction for readers, writers/artists, and anyone in between. Fanfiction seems to be a large part of our fandom (any fandom?) ... almost as much as the canon episodes and the visuals and anything else related to our two favorite Bay City Detectives.

I don’t like reading slash in S&H because *I* think it’s out of character for this show. I tried to read it, but I don’t like reading sex scenes (het, slash, alien, whatever) and in 95% of the slash stories I tried to read there were explicit sex scenes and in MY opinion it was all just about sex and it was not necessary for the plot and I have no idea why such scene was there in a first place, so I don’t read it, because for the 5% I’m not going to risk my peace of mind. And I DON’T TELL PEOPLE THEY SHOULD/SHOULD NOT WRITE/READ IT. This is just MY opinion and I don’t make anybody to feel the same way.

And recently I am careful even with gen stories, because in his fandom almost everything what is not slash is labeled as gen and in these gen stories there are also ‘hidden’ het stories with explicit sex scenes - also completely unnecessary in MY opinion - so I don’t read much new stories recently. It also is just my problem and nobody is forced to feel the same way.

I do read slash stories in Riptide sometimes (I also think it’s out of character, but I can look at that as gen in certain cases) but because there are not many stories or authors in this fandom and I know the style of my favorite author who labels her stories the way I like it, so when it’s rated PG-13 or below I know there is no danger for me to read what I don’t like to. So I do read it and I like it :)

I’m not active in any other fandom, so I can’t tell if I would read it then, sorry.

Now I am curious. :) The slash fics that you read, do you pretend that they are gen when you read them?

I don't pretend. In my head they are not lovers so I don't need to pretend anything. And in Riptide being very close is canon for the main characters, so as long as there are no sex scenes it's gen for me.

No worries, I was just curious. Some folks don't really like fanfic that strays too much from what's been given in show/book/movie canon (which slash tends to do) and some people simply don't want to read sex scenes. I was just curious if it was all fandoms for you or just these two guys you couldn't see this way. Thanks for explaining. As a writer (and a reader of course) I'm always interested in what people like and don't like, and why.
