Airing-out history

Jul 04, 2008 02:07

I like to fly my century-old, 45-star flag every July 4th - both to air it out and to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence which took place 232 years ago today. I couldn't fly it last year, though, due to high winds, but conditions are just right today.

Yes, it's the real deal - a genuine period antique flag. It's made of wool bunting, and if you look closely (in person) you can see little moth holes here and there, but overall it's in pretty good shape for its age. It's still rather fragile, though, so I can't fly it very often or even let it hang like this for too long (the curve at the top will "settle in" the fabric after a while and that's not good).

*chuckle* It's funny, no one around here's ever noticed that this flag is "different" than any other they might see on July 4th, despite its size and obvious (to me, at least) age. Never a remark or curious question from a neighbor or a passer-by. People just don't notice stuff like this. Oh well, I enjoy it, and that's the important thing.
