Summary: I’m afraid to touch her, make it worse than it already is. So many ways I could touch her, things I could do, that would just leave her more broken.
She’s got bruises on her skin. She lies like a skeleton on my Batman sheets, sleeping like a corpse, breathing in short wheezes. It’s like looking at a broken doll, a neglected plaything. That’s all she was to her father: a toy he could do anything he pleased to. She coughs now, spitting up blood on my pillowcase. There’s so much blood. Blood on the carpet, on my t-shirt, on the sidewalk outside, on her. It’s like a crimson epidemic.
I’m afraid to touch her, make it worse than it already is. So many ways I could touch her, things I could do, that would just leave her more broken.
But she needs comfort.
I settle with gripping her cold clammy hand, and just holding on.
Holding until morning, dreading when she has to leave again, only to return to me again tomorrow night with new bruises, new hurt.
She moaned softly as she opened her eyelids, looking at me with eyes full of sorrow.
“Gee, can you come lie with me?” she whispered hoarsely.
I carefully slipped my hand out of hers and lay down behind her, gently wrapping my arms around her.
“Shh. Go to sleep, my love. I’m right here to protect you.”
She closed her beaten eyes, resting into my hold on her.
“Until morning,” she mumbled, just before drifting off to sleep.
I felt a tear run down my cheek, at her words. I was so entirely unable to protect her from what she feared the most.
I could only protect her from the darkness, from ever being alone.
