Summary:

Castle steps forward, eyes painted black with shadows, lips cut into a razor sharp smile that makes the teenager’s insides constrict and shudder, back pressed firmly against a hard wall as the billionaire drew closer in the darkness, shifting forward without words or sound, until he was suddenly at the Gamer’s side, bleeding ice into the inches between them and Simon was afraid. Castle’s pale features distorted painfully as he leaned forward, every inch the predator, coming into the weak light Simon had been clinging to and revealing not eyes, but empty soulless holes and he knows he’s dreaming then. Even that knowledge though doesn’t stop the way his body spasms, throat catching on the beginning of a bloodcurdling shriek as the doppelganger reaches back and then strikes quickly with an open hand and greedy fingers, skin dissolving into something intangible as it meets Simon’s forehead and passes through, invading everything intimate, and suddenly the Gamer can’t breathe, blue eyes wide with fear because even if this is a nightmare he knows if something doesn’t change he’s going to die and-

“Stop crying,” the order is barked out from the darkness, rough, panicked and untempered, and when Simon finally opens wet eyes he finds that there is a hand, reaching forward in the dim light, but not Castle’s.

Curled up on his side Simon doesn’t move, rough breathing the only sound now as he watches Tilman pause, the older man sitting cross-legged at his side as if he’d been there for some time, watching the Gamer sleep. It’s as if now that he’s been caught there is some decision that needs to be made, Simon able to tell by the way the former Slayer’s eyes won’t meet his own, but the teenager will not beg for the attention even though he suddenly realizes that he wants to, desperately.

He shouldn’t be having nightmares about Castle, about losing all the control Simon coveted so, about living, but being dead on the inside, nothing more than a puppet whose strings could be easily cut. It doesn’t make any sense, but then a rough hand is there, calloused fingers threading back through sleep-curled black strands and eyes he didn’t remember closing snap back open, shock piercing through the thick blanket of irrational fear.

“No one had a choice...even you.”

And the Gamer isn’t sure if he completely understands, because the Slayer went through so much and Simon had just played the game, but hearing those simple words breaks something inside, something sharp and twisted in his chest like it was put together wrong.  Once again Simon finds it’s hard to breathe, but this time Kable doesn’t hesitate, fingers calm, soothing and just there against the crown of his head.

“We all were controlled.”

The words are a dry whisper in his ear, Tillman bent forward, hovering above him, hand unbearably gentle like Simon is something worth protecting, and the Gamer can barely stand it because even though this should be wrong, it feels so right.

To Simon those four words sound like forgiveness and it’s something he never asked for, but as hot emotion bleeds through wet lashes, painting clear trails over the bridge of his nose and across his left cheek,  it’s something he’ll thank god for every day after.
